Re-entering: Visual Ghost

Ghosts are not but they appear and they become. Once they are there, they disappear. They are do not last and at the same time, at the moment of appearance they fill the space with their time and their presence. A ghost is present but not visible, is not materialized in matter but tangible, even if only in sensations or thoughts.

Visual Ghost is something that appears between the performance and the audience, or we could say an event and a perceiver – without them nothing would come into presence.

During SODA, I engaged in investigations of how to provoke these phenomena through the body, sounds and text. Attempting to trigger the audience in the ways I mention, to experience certain kind of 'images' not present in vision but nevertheless still present.

I focused on contradicting body signals and on the use of sound in order to create mental images, or distorting the perception of actions. I worked with the idea of choreographing the eye using text and the use of it as an extension of perception. I embodied the “Visual Ghost” following traces that remained in the space.

In this final piece I compound all of those studies, approaching the concept of Visual Ghost in a different way to make reference to theater or performance itself. The space gets deconstructed, and this deconstruction comes as an attempt to 'dismantle' the performance.

You could see it as the story of the story of the story, or the memory of the memory of the memory. There is a logic to it, a ghostly logic.

Oh! Deep Sea - Corpus III

the whole life passes before your eyes

Premiere
29 November - 1 December 2012 // HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin

With the premiere of Oh! Deep Sea – Corpus III, the choreographer Kat Válastur brings her long-term, four-part project to a close. Four performers share on stage a choreography, which aspires to connect the fragments of a biography displaced in time and space. The work sets a kinetic status in which being is seeing as broken images put back together in order to unfold the force and grace of mortality.

With Oh! Deep Sea – Corpus III, Kat Válastur ends her cycle of choreography based on Homer’s Odyssey. 2,500 years after the epos was written, the Greek choreographer uses the ancient classic that describes the king’s odyssey after the Trojan War to pose very modern questions on human existence. In her expressive, yet minimalistic choreography, she reflects on these questions while liberating them from the narrative plot.

The fourth and final part is inspired by Ulysses’ journey as a living being into the underworld. Time and place become meaningless. But how does a living person experience this state? With razor-sharp precision, Válastur dissects autobiographical stories, memories and images in the finest sequences of movement. In the spectator’s eye, she manages to create the illusion of an early film on the bodies of the four performers, anatomized into individual chapters and recurring images so that new stories are continually created. But, for all their immediacy, they disappear just as abruptly, giving way to another episode. A whole life passes before your eyes...

Oh! Deep Sea - Corpus III

(Your whole life passing before your eyes)

WITH: Anna Laura Lozza, Enrico Ticconi, Kat Válastur and Ixchel Mendoza Hernández

“Oh! Deep Sea – Corpus III” is a piece for four performers and the forth episode of a long term project by the title “Oh! Deep Sea” inspired by Homer's Odyssey. “I feel Odyssey as a journey which passes through space but breaks through time.” The current project is based on the episode in which Ulysses visits Nekyia, “the land of the dead”. My intention is not a narrative representation of an epic episode but the detection, revelation and exposure of hidden archetypes inside the myth in order to use their forces as a source of inspiration.

“Your body is displaced by an unknown force into another dimension. In this unknown space, time is not a coherent stream but a fragmented wholeness. The possibility of that presence to shift freely within time, neglecting time's abilities, creates a new kind of kinetic status. The remaining presences move there in the same way, like broken images put back together in order to narrate about a time they were mortals”
